Putnam graduated from Life Christian Academy in 2007 and went on to play college golf at Pepperdine University in Malibu, California, from 2007 to 2011. During his time at Pepperdine, he won two tournaments and was a three-time All-American.
Putnam turned professional in 2011 and competed on the eGolf Professional Tour in 2012. He made his Web.com Tour debut in 2013, finishing 49th on the money list, which was not enough to earn a PGA Tour card.
