The Official World Golf Ranking currently has Rory McIlroy in first place. No. 3 is Jon Rahm. Both have performed incredibly well in recent months, but McIlroy is certain that one of them deserves to be at the top of the list.
McIlroy gave a brief response when asked if he felt like the best player in the world on Wednesday at the WM Phoenix Open. He replied, “Yes,” when pressed to elaborate.
“Since I do. I’m doing a good job. I believe I have been as consistent as I have ever been in my career.”
“I believe the outcomes speak for themselves, as well, spanning not just the last six months but truly the prior 18 months following the Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits,” the author said.
Very recently, since his past two PGA Tour appearances—the Tour Championship at the end of the season and the CJ Cup in October—McIlroy has won both of them. In January, he added even another triumph to his resume by winning the DP World Tour’s Dubai Desert Classic.
“I feel like the most complete player I’ve ever been like I said at the end of last year. There aren’t any obvious flaws in my statistical categories if you only look at them. To strive to become a more well-rounded player, I’ve worked pretty hard on that,” he stated.
Rahm won twice on the DPWT to end the year of 22 and twice on the PGA Tour to start the year 23. The two will be competing against one another for the first time this year. The last two times, Rahm placed T-4 while McIlroy took home the CJ Cup. The next year, Rahm won the DP World Tour Championship, and McIlroy came in fourth.
Scottie Scheffler, who is ranked No. 2 in the OGWR and won his first Tour championship at this competition a year ago, is in between them. He eventually finished with a green jacket and a position at the top of the world after winning four times in six starts. He hasn’t won since the Masters, but a victory this week would put him back in first place.
“I’m currently ranked No. 2, but I don’t believe I’m playing the second-best golf in the world; Rory and Jon are likely neck-and-neck for the top spot right now, so the rankings are absurd.
“But I dislike being in second place. I prefer to rank first.” That mantel has belonged to McIlroy since October, at least for the time being. He is undoubtedly playing some of the greatest golf of his career, but he isn’t satisfied. Despite winning in Dubai, he wasn’t happy with his performance. He became much better as a result, working even harder.
“I got on the range and started to practice and work on some things as soon as I got home to Florida last week, and I feel like my game is in a better spot now than it was roughly at this time a week ago,” he added.
But it’s pleasant. I feel like I’ve done some solid work over the past six or seven days, and as I said, feeling a bit better because of it. It’s wonderful to have that first start of the year out of the way and see where the areas are to improve.
